SuperCoach Herald Sun's advice review - Melbourne

Every year the Herald Sun releases the little black book giving advice on who to buy and who to avoid. I will point out some of the ones they overlooked and errors they made while also offering my own suggestions. Of course I will praise the decisions that I agree with and why I agree with them.

Melbourne

Melbourne, did they go backwards or forwards last year? That is a conundrum that the board was presented with after being flogged by Geelong to the tune of 186 points. The response from the board was to sack the coach Dean Bailey. From this they gained the services of Mark Neeld who has inherited a list capable of so much and with the acquistion of Mitch Clark the finals should be viewed as a minimum for them. Expect Melbourne to put more games into youngsters who will be stronger and have another preseason under their belt. This is great from a fantasy perspective because they should get more of the ball, kick higher scores which all leads to more SC points meaning there is value.

The Superstar
Colin Sylvia - Is easily the Demon’s best player at this point and will average close to 100 across the whole season. There is just one thing about him. He has a knack of brain fades that either result in him being suspended  by the AFL (reported) or by Melbourne (club imposed). If you are confident he will not get reported then pick him since he has a favourable bye draw otherwise pick him up when he returns from doing something stupid.

Bank 'Em
Brent Maloney - Most improved Melbourne midfielder last season falling just short of elite. Slightly under priced due to a 0 he copped (v Geelong) while playing sick he presents plenty of value. With the improvement of the Melbourne midfield his scores should go up with more support. If you are looking for a cheap M4 or M5 he is very hard to pass up.

Jack Trengrove  -I rate him higher than Tom Scully and I think Melbourne should be happy they lost Scully instead of this bloke. Firstly, he can play. Entering his 3rd season in the AFL system he is set to break the 100 point barrier. First season of captain he will feel the need to try and lift his side out of bad situations, coupled with the natural improvement of Melbourne means he should be able to improve. Jump on especially if you are looking for a point of difference and a mid pricer you could do a lot worse than Jack Trengrove.

Buy 'Em
Jack Watts - Ignore the negative press. He can play and this season should see more time up the ground. As a fourth year player he is developing nicely to become a star of the competition. This year when he plays expect him to score well and hold his spot in the Melbourne side. Natural improvement and growing body mean he is a very good smoky pick.

James Magner - Touted as Barlow 2.0 but I think people are getting ahead of themselves on that call. Expect him to average 80 (Barlow averaged 110) which for a minimum priced player is going to be a very handy return. Also factor this in: He hurt his hand and got named in the middle for round 1. That is how highly he is rated by the Melbourne side. Jump on, watch his price rise and use him as a cash cow to upgrade to an all premium team.

Bury 'Em
Jamie Bennell -  Has potential but never going to be fantasy relevant.  Small forwards rarely do well in fantasy football and this is no exception. Expect him to have some good games littered in with the bad ones. By no means pick him but I think the next player needs to be heeded.

Suggested Player
Jack Grimes - The Melbourne co-captain has burned many people over the years with the promise of scoring but only for it to end in bitter disappointment and frustration. Has played 35 games over 5 seasons which should say more than enough about his durability. Only pick him if you are extremely ballsy (Chuck Norris level) or a glutton for punishment. Only pick Grimes after he has completed a full season.

Jake Spencer  - Firstly it is unfair to target one Melbourne ruckman when their ruck division consists of Mark Jamar so read on.

Suggested Player/s
Any Melbourne Ruck not named Mark Jamar -  Entire Melbourne ruck division (apart from Jamar) – Nobody else will get a game due to injuries, not good enough and Stefan Martin. There is no reason to pick  a Melbourne ruckman anywhere especially with all the options available this season in the rucks.
