SuperCoach Herald Sun's advice review - Greater Western Sydney

Every year the Herald Sun releases the little black book giving advice on who to buy and who to avoid. I will point out some of the ones they overlooked and errors they made while also offering my own suggestions. Of course I will praise the decisions that I agree with and why I agree with them.

Greater Western Sydney

Greater Western Sydney (GWS) embark on their first season in the AFL with a batch of youngsters on their list and a lot less expeirence on their list than Gold Coast did in their debut year. Many have touted them as not being able to win a game but this time last season the Gold Coast were given the same prognosis. Expect many sides to be carrying a stack of GWS rookies since majority of the list will be at rookie price and having access to a wide range of young players not to mention mature age recruits. This season expect GWS to get knocked around alot but also be the most fantasy relevant side.

GWS, the newest team in the AFL has very little going for it in terms of SuperCoach track record so their display will look slightly different.

Great Expectations

Dylan Shiel - This kid will be a jet and it is impossible to disagree with the call made here. Dominated the NEAFL as a 17 year old only scoring below 100 once.

Stephen Clifton - Mature age recruit who dominated the VFL for North Ballarat winning the Liston Trophy before joining GWS to repeat his work in the NEAFL. Micheal Barlow redux?

Stephan Coniglio - 2nd draft pick and will carry a lot of expectations on him. You could argue this is a bad call but he will play and should score similar to Shiel. That is where the problem lies though since he has an inflated price (191k compared to Shiel's 113k). Will play but hard to justify, but does carry expectations.

Keep an eye on

Johnathon Patton - The 1st draft pick will play this season but will not score well. It is extremely rare for a key position player to dominate first up the way the Herald Sun is talking him up. Highly doubt he will be a downgrade target especially considering his inflated price tag of 196k.

Suggested Player
Adam Treloar - Has been touted for a Round 1 debut and has Fwd/Mid dual position compatibility. Additionally he is priced on the base level due to being a 17 year old recruit so essentially he is a lock if he lines up round one and has a cracking NAB cup. Also this is his 2nd full preseason.

Johnaton Giles - Not sure why we are keeping an eye on him? He will play, he is 24 and GWS do not have much or any of a ruck division. He is a lock although I guess we could be keeping an eye on him to know what he looks like.

Tim Mohr - Matured aged and a key backman. Granted he won the B&F for Casey Scorpions from full back and will play but that is it really. He will get games but will not score well as a key back. The ball will come in alot but odds are he won't get it. Good for a reserve option but really bad for growth. There should be much higher scoring options out there.

Suggested Player
Sam Darley - Can kick and has been touted as a fantasy scorer coming out of the backline. Highest last season for effective kicks for GWS as well as handball receives indicates he runs hard, get the ball and knows how to use it. At base price as a 17 year old recruit he has had two preseason's under his belt now just like Treloar. If he is named for round one, jump on.
