SuperCoach Herald Sun's advice review - Port Adelaide

Every year the Herald Sun releases the little black book giving advice on who to buy and who to avoid. I will point out some of the ones they overlooked and errors they made while also offering my own suggestions. Of course I will praise the decisions that I agree with and why I agree with them.

Port Adelaide

Last season Port Adelaide would have been glad that Gold Coast existed otherwise they were a shoe in for the spoon last season. Off the field they are in a lot of trouble with finances in peril and a bad stadium deal in place. To cap that off on the field they suffered multiple 100 point drubbings and at one point cheered by their own supporters for getting the ball past the halfway point were some of the low points during the season. The biggest high point was the amount of kids they were forced to play due to retirements of Chad Cornes, Dean Brogan and co while also not giving games to guys like Jacob Surjan or Kane Cornes. 2012 will be another long year for the Power but there is light at the end of the tunnel with guys like Chad Wingard, Ben Jacobs and John Butcher all getting into them.

The Superstar
Hamish Hartlett - Whilst I cannot recommend any Port player with confidence I think he is the best of the lot. If he stays fit could easily average 110 over the season. In a Port Adelaide team set to improve on last season’s performance If you are looking for a unique M5 that is cheap and you are confident he can play 22 games jump on.

Bank 'Em
Robbie Gray - Another player who burns people but unlike others he stays on the park. He just goes missing. With more midfield time rumoured for Gray expect his scores to become more consistent thus increasing in average. This means that if you pick him ahead of Dangerfield or Sidebottom you will have a very awesome unique pick on your hands.

Travis Boak - Similar to Hartlett in development but slightly more durable. If you are looking for a cheap midfielder for an M5 or M6 spot (assuming you are going a strong midfield) who should average 100-105 over the season. Will be a great pick next season and if you are looking to save cash could be an extremely hand pick.

Buy 'Em
Nathan Blee and Darren Pfeiffer - Both of these players are on the cusp for a round 1 or early season debut which means both of them will be downgrade targets. With a Port team that is developing expect there to be plenty of team rotations which means these two will be rotated through the side racking up some games over the season. Look for them to be downgrade options.

Bury 'Em
Justin Westoff - So much potential but does not look like he will convert it into Supercoach points in the foreseeable future. Shame to be honest since he will be a very good player and looked like being a great pick as a premium but at this stage it is long way off. Disappointing really but that’s how it goes. Avoid at all costs.

Kane Cornes - For a player that has been serviceable to the fantasy community for so long it is unfair to write him off. He can play and will be in the midfield rotations at Port Adelaide for the upcoming season so he should score well. I am by no means saying pick him but saying he is a player you bury is very harsh.

Suggested Player
John McCarthy - Has been hyped as a mid priced smoky but frankly I do not see it.  Consider the depth at Port Adelaide and the game time he has played over the preseason (there is no reason to nurse a fit 22 year old) it is hard to see him scoring well. For all those that pick him expect to be disappointed especially with the better option of Josh Caddy available.
